2006 - East Harlem, New York

The Arts Incubator is a space for visiting artists to live, create and exhibit their work in the heart of El Barrio in East Harlem, New York. During year-long fellowships, artists collaborate with other artists working locally, as well as other fellows from around the world, stimulating and promoting new ideas and visions and sharing their work with the local community and the city of New York. The building engages pedestrians and vistors by pulling away from the streetwall creating a public courtyard bordered by a small café, inviting the local community into the spectacle of exhibition. In the interior, visitors are enticed up a large, central, sculptural stairway that connects the public galleries at all levels. The staircase presses into the separate circulation connecting the artists' private live/work studios, promoting interaction between visitors and fellows.
